An area I grouse hunt holds some good numbers of them, 8 I know of for sure. Hunted there opening day of rifle-deer 3 years ago & saw more bear than deer!! Same spot, going back 7-8 years now, was hunting with my buddy Rob & his younger brother Charlie. We had 2 dogs down, both with beepers on & had been back in hunting for about an hour, got a few shots off on birds too. Came to a pine strip that edges a thick old thornapple patch when Rob stops & says "Hey Annie, check it out, I think one of the farmer down the roads cows got out..." I walk up & see what he's looking at, 'bout then I asked him to listen & he said he didn't hear anything....I said "That's because it's a flippin' bear you dope!!" (language changed for public viewing ) "If it was a cow it wouldn't be walking so quietly through a thicket!!" (cow in the woods??) Well, we didn't want to cross paths with him as he had to have heard us & was in NO hurry to get out of there. Gathered the dogs up & decided to get out & go elsewhere. We hadn't walked 100yds, Charlie was leading, when he turned around running towards us white as a ghost & yelling "BEAR!!!" Sure enough, there he was running at us. Stopped about 30yds from us clacking his teeth, hopping up & down on his front & huffing at us. We stood our ground yelling at him & he moved off. (all the while I'm looking at my Browning Citauri 20GA O/U straight skeet/skeet thinking, well this would really tick him off....) I'd say he went about 500-550lbs. Hunted there twice during bear season now & saw a few deer. Go figure.

Wow good story, did you have to go home & change your pants. ;D I didn't, but I'm not so sure about poor Charlie....... All that kept running through my head was "Please let the nature shows be right about standing your ground, Please......' ;D I saw a sow there last year with 3 cubs. Might put a trail cam out this spring & just hope no one finds it.

One day this past January went to hunt up some bunnies, took 6 hounds, a buddy and my 12 yr old nephew. We were hunting a real nasty clearcut near Snowshoe. The dogs got one going right out of the truck, they ran it for about a half hour just stroking it. My nephew finally got it for his #30 for the year. The hounds ran a few more and we got some more shooting. We ended up getting 3 more, every thing was normal up to the 4th rabbit. We had just shot rabbit # 4 and got it cleaned out, the dogs were all looking for another to run, my Dixie dog goes into a huge log pile and all h#$% breaks loose. I hear a dog scream and see her fly up over the log pile, maybe 10 feet or so. I can't believe what I am seeing! 4 bears come around that log pile looking for whatever just woke them up. The dog that was airborne hit the ground and split! I mean to tell ya she was gettin' gone! The bears were all at least 150-200# and one had to be over 400 easy. I started yelling and screaming trying to gather the other dogs, They came and kinda hid behind us milling around wondering what they did wrong. After a couple of shots over the "bow" the bears moved off .We went over to see if we could see blood in the snow from the dog(none)and there was a perfect shelter probably 10x20 or so under the logs covered with brambles. It looked as if the bears had been denned there awhile. I was Freaking out trying to find the dog that took off while trying to keep the others from trying to get too close to the bears. The Nephew was a wreck!!! I got him calmed down and convinced we didn't need to worry about them anymore, so we started making our way back to the truck. The dogs started another chase, and after a couple of minutes, I heard what may have been the best sound I have ever heard, she was back in the race!! I Could see Dix was running normal, so I let her run. They ran this one for about 45 minutes really giving Mr Bunny the business, I took a looong shot and nailed it for #5(my 2nd)for the day and we were at the truck. I got a hold of my Dixie dog to see how she was and she's got a bad puncture in the hide between her shoulder blades and her name plate was bent in half! She must have dove right in the den with these guys and one grabbed her and started shaking her! It must have only had a hold with one tooth so she got loose and we really lucked out no broken bones or muscle damage. She seems a little bruised but not especially hurt, I put peroxide in the hole a couple of times. I packed it with EMT gell and hope she's ready to go Monday. This was one hunt that won't be forgotten for quite awhile.
