Closest I have gotten was one night when the mule deer were feeding on the crabapples at work. I was working swing shift - 3 to 11:30.
I just got off work, I had to walk past a courtyard to get to my parking area. There was a privacy fence around most of the courtyard. The crabapple trees are in the courtyard area.
As I was walking on my side of the fence, the muledeer forkhorn was walking on his side of the fence.
We literally met at the end of the fence, I could have reached out and slapped his behind as he went past. I am glad I didn't because he probably would have stomped the Bejesus out of me. As it was he snorted and took off at a stot (that is their wierd run/hop) until he got halfway across the football field on the other side of the road.
The next night he made a rub outta the endpost of the fence. They had to replace the fencepost.

I've touched them when they have walked by me sitting down next to a tree. Had one jump right over me once to.

Not that you'll believe me..but all true (1) While hunting had a buck jump a hedgerow and land on me...We got tangled up kicking the beegeegees out of each other... he actually kicked the p--s out of me! (2) had an 8 pt walk to within 10 ft to see what I was (3) while turkey hunting( I watch scent then too) I had a doe grab a mouth full of beech leaves and my headnet too...then yanged my head against the tree (4) had a doe and fawn walk up to me and fawn poked my knee with it's nose twice (5)jumped a doe and twins while walking...one fawn jumped and ran right into my legs so hard it bouced off me..that left a bruise...ll

....no I saw him clear hedge row and had just enough time to grab my gun with both hands and drop to my left knee while pushing out......he hit my shoulder and slid down my side as we hit the snow....some how we got tanged up and rolled in snow...both kicking and trying to get away from each other. He left me bruised from head to toe and I slept 3 days....

I had a young buck folow me once during turkey season like a dog. When I first saw him, I sat real still to see how close he would get, he got about 25 or so yds from me. I finally got bored with it & wanted to go find my hunting partner as it was almost noon & slow anyway. I got up thinking he would run now, he did, but only a few feet, he then turned & walked slowly towards me. I didn't think much of it, grabbed my dekes & started walking....he ran a big circle around me, shaking his head & kicking up his hind legs like when young deer play & ended up about 15 ft from me. He followed me all the way to my buddies spot, walking right alongside me - about 15 ft was the closest he got. Every so often, he would drop his head & buck a little & run around me again "bouncing"....then he would stop & stare, swear he wanted to play, LOL!! When I found Joe, he still didn't run off, but followed us almost all the way back to the truck.
