I love getting kids out & take some every year for the youth phez hunt. I have several fully broke dogs I use(once they establish point, they do not move until released to retrieve a shot bird, relocate on a running bird or hunt on), I believe this allows the kids better time to prepare for a shot & check for safety hazards. (other hunters, etc). Here's last years hunt:
Started out about 7:30 at an SGL by me. My buddy John met up with me, the kids & Mike & Bill, their dads, for the first few hours with his 2 dogs(he could only hunt till 9) & we each took a dog out with the boys.......
Second point of the day (first bird ran down a mowed strip & flushed way out ahead...) Johns dog Tucker on point.....second pic I got Tara backing in the pic, the kids are working the bird, Johns between the dogs in second pic.
Johns other dog Chase, Taras brother on a rooster - flushed out the other side, no shot....
Not a good pic(many of the points were in heavy cover), my 10 yr old Buck(father of Chase & Tara) on point, kids got this one, nice rooster - this is the same bird Tara found in the next pic....they missed & Buck managed to find it about 300 yds down!!!
John had to go so it was Buck & Tara hunting for the boys for the rest of the AM......4 birds to go.....Tara on a bird, another nice rooster.....missed it the first time, but not the second!!!
Everyone with their limit by 11 AM, what a great day, I had a blast with these guys, very polite, nice young men, hunted safe & sure shoot better than I do.......LOL!! Probably put up 15 birds in all, most pointed, think only 1 was bumped & 1 put up by us. Had 2 points & flushes on the way back to the van too..... ;D my furkids sure had fun too.
